NOTE TO ARCHIVERS: Please don't use these installation notes as the description of the package. A better capsule summary can be found in the Read Me and the User Guide introduction.
Requirements
This package requires System 7.0 or later. It has also been used successfully with System 8.6, the system revision current at the time of this release.
What You Should Have
The following files are provided as part of the standard distribution:
• Installation Guide -- (text file) you are reading it.
• User Guide -- (folder) documentation in HTML (web page) format.
• Register (Dave Warker) -- (application) used to pay shareware fee via KAGI service.
• Remember? -- (application) the heart of the package.
• Remember? Extension -- (system extension) required for pop-up alerts.
• Occasions -- (folder) sample occasion files to get you started.
• Delayed Startup Script -- sample use of new AppleScript command
You have an incomplete distribution if you are missing any of these items. You can download the full distribution from my web site <http://www.warker.com> or any of the popular Net archives such as Info-Mac. My web site also contains additional occasion collections such as: religious holidays, files with holidays for U.S. and other countries, plus a large collection of celebrity birthdays and notable events.
Upgrading from a Previous Version
All occasions and preferences are carried over when you upgrade. However, before installing a new version it is always a Good Idea to save copies of your existing occasion files , Remember's settings file and the old Remember? and Remember? Extension files to a floppy disk.
Installation
Suggestion: Installation is easier working from a printed copy of these instructions.
1. Install the Extension
Drag and drop the Remember? Extension onto the icon for the System Folder on your hard drive. The System Folder is found in the window you see when you double click the hard drive icon at the top right of the screen, generally just below the menu bar. It should be placed into the Extensions folder inside the System Folder and you should see a message to this effect. Select 'OK' if you are asked if you want to replace an older version of the extension with the new file (presumably you are already using a version of the package.)
NOTE: There appears to be an incompatibility between Remember?'s pop-up alerts and several Graphics Accelerator extensions. If pop-up alerts appear as text only with no background, then you must remove any graphics accelerator extensions present in the system Extensions folder. This will be corrected in the next release.
2. Install the application in the Apple Menu
If You are Using System 8.5 or Later:
Drag and drop the Remember? application onto the icon for the System Folder on your hard drive just as you did with Remember? Extension. above. It will be automatically routed to the Apple Menu Items folder where it belongs. Any previous version of the application will be replaced unless you have renamed it. In that case you must manually trash the previous version.
If You are Using System 7.0 through 8.1:
Double click the System Folder icon and look in the System Folder window for a folder named Apple Menu Items (changing the System Folder to a View by Name list might make this easier.) Drag and drop the Remember? application onto the Apple Menu Items folder icon then close the System Folder window.
NOTE: This is the most direct way to get the application in the Apple menu. Experienced users can choose to keep the application in some other folder on their hard drive and place an alias of it in the Apple Menu Items folder. It will work fine either way HOWEVER you must place the application on the same volume as the System Folder or the automatic startup options may not work!
3. Install the Occasions folder
SKIP THIS STEP IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION. This is only for new users installing the package for the first time. Replacing your existing copies of the occasion files contained in this folder will cause the loss of any occasions you have already added occasions to the Personal file.
For you new users, drag the Occasions folder and drop it onto the icon for the System Folder. This folder contains a few sample files with common holidays and a few celebrity birthdays. It also contains an empty occasion file named Personal you can use for your own additions. None of these are required. You are free to create your own set of files to match your personal preferences. However, these files will give you a good starting point until you feel confident enough to organize things differently.
4. Restart the Computer
Select Restart from the Finder's Special menu so that the extension can load into memory. You should now see a new icon with the Remember? logo among the other extension icons that march across the bottom of the screen at startup. If you don't see it, make sure that Remember? Extension is in the Extensions folder. If you use an extension manager such as NOW Startup Manager or Conflict Catcher, make sure that the extension is enabled there.
If this is a new installation, the icon will have a frowning face and a large X. That's OK because you haven't configured the application yet.
If you are upgrading from a previous version, you are all done. Go ahead and play with the new version but be sure to read the User Guide to check for changes and additions.
Additional Installation Required for New Users
If all goes well, after Restart you should get a message telling you to use the application to finish the install. Do that by selecting Remember? from the the 'apple' menu at the left end of the menu bar. The first thing the package does is search for occasion files in the System Folder and the folder containing the application. This is quite fast so the window may only appear very briefly.
Next you should see the About box with a short "welcome" message and general information about the package. Read the text then click <Done> to enter the application. Close the next message saying that the Default window list is empty, we already knew that because you are a new user. Now you should see a window listing the current month's events. Experiment with the What's Happening menu to find a date range you want to see every time you open the application. Feel free to move and resize the event list window as well. When you are satisfied choose File menu : Select Window Set sub-menu : Save This Set and you will see the same window arrangement every time you use the application.
If you chose NOT to install the sample files, you will need to create at least one occasion file before you can do anything useful. Read the User's Guide section that discusses the Active Occasion File list to learn how to do this.
Before playing too much you should probably read the entire User Guide to learn the details of how everything works. The important topics are creating occasions and also the section about setting preferences, since everyone has their own idea on how things should look. To get started open the User Guide folder then double click on the Netscape, Explorer or iCab documents, whichever is appropriate for your favorite web browser.
NOTE: Some web browsers have difficulty displaying a document contained within a folder that includes a '?' in its name. If you see the error "FILE NOT FOUND" when attempting to open the User guide, move the "User Guide" folder outside of the "Remember? v3.3 folder" and try again.
